Grandfather Clocks

•A Guide To Grandfather Clocks•

Using Grandfather Clock Kits
Grandfather clocks are stately and elegant, but not everyone can afford to buy one. However, most grandfather clock kits are affordable and can give you a great clock that you'll have the satisfaction of knowing you made yourself.

Most kits contain everything you need to build your own grandfather clock. You'll find the wood, the hardware in the instructions to build the clock case. Some may even be pre-drilled with some parts already assembled. All you need to do is assemble the rest and stain and varnish the clock. You'll need to buy the face and works separately, but this is actually part of the fun because you get to put together your own clock by taking the pieces and parts that you want all resulting in a unique timepiece that no one else will have.

Grandfather clock kits are available for every skill level. If you aren't very handy and have never built a clock or done much carpentry work before you can buy a novice kit that has a lot of the heavy work done for you. On the other end of the spectrum, if you are an accomplished carpenter, you may opt to only buy the plans for the clock and build the whole thing on your own from scratch.

The simplest of the clock kits can be assembled in about a day and the board danced may take several weeks. There are huge variety of kits available for every style of grandfather clock you would want to build.

When you're choosing the face of the movement, you may have some decisions to make. Do you want a pendulum movement? What kind of times do you want? Should you use chain or cable driven? All these is something you need to think about but some like the pendulum size might be dictated by the size of the clock case. The Times could be you Westminster, St. Michael's or Whittington and are really a matter of personal preference. The face and hands may even be bought separately in which case you have to measure the hand lane and make sure it is appropriate for the clock face you have chosen.

Grandfather clock kits can range anywhere from under $100 to over $2000 but can be well worth the money as they can be a great project for you to work on and result in a wonderful and functional piece of furniture that you can be proud to display in your home.
